My Nana, My Hero

Everyone has a special person in their life—someone who makes them feel loved, safe, and happy. For many kids, it might be their mum or dad. But for me, that person has always been my Nana—my mum’s father.

Since I was a little toddler, my Nana has always been by my side. He spoiled me with toys—remote-controlled cars, tricycles, scooters—you name it! And yes, there were lots of sweets and candies, too! Maybe not the best idea health-wise, but every gift he gave came from a heart full of love.

As I grew older and outgrew the toys and treats, Nana didn’t stop making memories with me. Almost every weekend, he would take me to the local club where he had a membership. I could run around freely, play on swings and slides, eat yummy food, and just be me. It was one of the happiest places on Earth for me.

Nana also loved nature. He often took me to flower shows and beautiful parks. He showed me how amazing plants are—and now his home is filled with plants and flowers of every colour you can imagine: yellow, red, purple, and even tall palm trees swaying in the wind.

And oh—Fridays with Nana were the best! When we visited, he always made sure I stayed the night so we could wake up early the next morning and go out to eat my favourite breakfast: halwa puri at a little dhaba (a roadside restaurant). It was our little tradition, and I loved it.

Now that I’m older and my Nana has grown older too, he doesn’t go out as much anymore. Walking and driving are harder for him now, so I try to spend time with him at home. We sit and talk about his past—his exciting adventures as a sailor and the countries he visited. I tell him about my school and my day. We laugh, remember, and learn from each other.

Sometimes, I give him a little massage when he’s tired or in pain. It’s a small way for me to say “thank you” for everything he’s done for me over the years.

I know I can never fully repay Nana for the love and care he has given me, but I try my best—by spending time with him and showing him how much I care. That’s what matters most when someone you love grows older.

Nana, you have always been my hero, my teacher, and my best friend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. One day, I hope to be just like you for my own grandkids—full of love, laughter, and endless kindness.
