A Flower That Follows the Sun
The beautiful lotus flower wakes up with the sunrise and closes its petals at sunset every day! This magical routine goes on for a few days before the petals fall off. Many people see the lotus as a sign of purity and new beginnings.
Colors with Meaning
Lotus flowers bloom in many pretty colors like pink, white, yellow, red, and even blue (which is very rare!). Each color has its own special meaning. For example, pink lotus is believed to be the most sacred in Buddhism.
Super-Clean Leaves!
Lotus leaves are amazing โ water and dirt just roll right off them! This is called the “lotus effect”, and it helps keep the leaves clean all by themselves. Scientists even study this to make things like waterproof jackets!
A Flower of Hope and Strength
Did you know that ancient Egyptians thought the lotus was a sacred flower? It grows in rivers and muddy wetlands. Sometimes, the lotus stays hidden during dry times and comes back to life when water returns โ thatโs why it became a symbol of resurrection and eternal life.
Yummy and Healthy Seeds!
In the middle of the lotus flower, thereโs a green pod that looks like a showerhead. This holds lotus seeds โ also called makhana. People eat them raw, roasted, or even like popcorn! These seeds are full of protein, fibre, and antioxidants โ great for your heart and tummy.
Tasty Roots Too!
Under the water, the lotus has long roots called rhizomes (but most people just say lotus roots). Theyโre crunchy and have a mild, earthy flavor. You can find them in soups, stir-fries, pickles, and even chips! They help with digestion, skin health, and are full of vitamin C and potassium.
