Humans caused lots of bird extinctions!
Scientists say that people might have caused 1,430 types of birds to go extinct! Thatβs about 1 out of every 8 bird species that once lived. This means weβve lost a lot more birds than we thought before.
Where did they all go?
Some of these lost birds include famous ones like the dodo from Mauritius and the great auk from the North Atlantic. Many of them disappeared after humans moved to new places, especially islands. In fact, 9 out of 10 of the extinct birds lived on islands with people.
What happened in New Zealand?
When people came to New Zealand, nearly half of the native birds vanished forever. Scientists there know a lot about the birds that used to live in the country, thanks to well-preserved bones and fossils.
Islands lost the most birds
The worst bird extinction event happened in the 14th century, when people first settled on islands like Hawaii and the Cook Islands. Around 570 birds disappeared β thatβs almost 100 times faster than the natural rate of extinction!
