My “Old-Fashioned” Mum

A Reflection for Teens

Have you ever felt super embarrassed when your mum walks into the room while you’re hanging out with friends? Maybe she didn’t get the jokes, didn’t know the cool songs, or said something that made everyone giggle. You probably gave a small smile and hoped the moment would pass quickly.

If this sounds familiar — you’re not alone. But maybe it’s time we think about things a little differently.

Being a teenager isn’t easy. You’re growing up, figuring out who you are, making friends, and dealing with tons of emotions. But guess what? Being a mum to a teenager is just as hard — maybe even harder.

Your mum is learning to keep up with you. Every day, you’re changing — the way you talk, what you like, who you hang out with. And she’s doing her best to understand and love every new version of you.

She knocks on your door, even if she knows you might not want to talk. She tries to understand your one-word answers and long silences. You feel misunderstood? So does she. No one gave her a guide on how to be the perfect mum to a growing teenager.

While you’re off texting friends, watching videos, or scrolling online, she’s watching you from the side — quietly, lovingly. She worries when you’re sad, prays when you’re upset, and always, always hopes you’re okay.

Your tests come with grades. Hers don’t. She shows love through patience, care, and kindness — even if she doesn’t get a “thank you.”

Yes, sometimes she might say your favorite celebrity’s name wrong, or ask silly questions about your favorite show. But she’s not trying to be annoying — she’s just trying to stay close, to feel part of your world.

A lot of teens think their mums are “out of touch.” But behind the old-fashioned jokes and outdated music is a woman who is doing her very best to stay connected to someone she loves more than anything — you.

She knows more than you think. Even when you don’t say anything, she can tell when you’re happy, sad, or worried. And most of the time, she gives you space — not because she doesn’t care, but because she wants you to grow strong, knowing she’s always there if you need her.

In a world where friends can change and trends move fast, your mum’s love stays the same — strong, true, and forever.

So next time she makes a mistake or says something “uncool,” don’t roll your eyes. Look at her. Really look. She was your first friend, your first safe place, and your biggest cheerleader.

She’s not out of date — she’s timeless.

And one day, when you look back, you’ll see she understood more than you ever realized. She was always right there — quietly loving you through it all.
