Kite flying may seem like fun, especially during festivals like Basant. The sky looks beautiful with colourful kites, and many children enjoy chasing and flying them. But did you know that flying kites can be very dangerous—and even deadly?
That’s why kite flying is banned in many places in Pakistan. It’s not because grown-ups want to spoil your fun, but because they want to keep everyone safe.
Let’s talk about what can go wrong. The strings used for kites are often very sharp. They can cut your hands deeply, even if you’re just holding a kite. Sometimes, children have to go to the hospital because of these painful cuts. Stitches hurt, and the scars can stay forever.
Worse, many children fall from rooftops while trying to catch kites. Some get very badly hurt, and a few even lose their lives. Imagine celebrating one minute and ending up in the hospital the next. That’s not fun—it’s frightening and sad.
And it’s not just the people flying the kites who are at risk. The sharp strings can hurt people on motorbikes or walking on the road. They can get tangled in trees and power lines, and you often can’t see them until it’s too late.
Recently, someone saw a boy fall from a roof and hit his head while chasing a kite. He had to be rushed to the hospital, and his condition was very serious. Another young man lost his life on the same day because of kite flying. These are real stories—and they happen every year.
It’s painful to see young children hurt just because of one day of celebration. That’s why we must all say a big “No” to kite flying. There are many safe and fun ways to celebrate Basant or any festival—like flying balloons, decorating your home, enjoying sweets, or playing games with friends.
Let’s celebrate in ways that bring happiness—not harm. Be smart, be kind, and think about your safety and the safety of others.
Say no to kite flying, and yes to a safer, happier world!
